A crucial part of integration is rest. You'd be surprised at how much you can gain from a single ceremony if you approach integration properly.

A crucial part of integration is rest, specifically taking time away from plant medicines. It’s impossible to begin proper integration without a period of abstinence from these plants. We recommend a minimum of three months for most people before even considering another ceremony.

This period of rest is foundational if your goal is real, lasting change in your life. Depending on your individual circumstances, 6 months or more could be even more beneficial. You’d be surprised at how much lasting change you can gain from a single ceremony if you approach integration properly. If you find yourself participating in ceremony after ceremony without significant positive changes in your life, it’s time to reassess your approach. Something else might be going on that needs attention.

This guidance applies to all types of plant medicines, not just the stronger ones used in formal ceremonies. Hapé, mambe, tobacco, coca, cacao, and even cannabis can quickly become addictive if not used with care. While these substances can be very helpful at specific times, moderation is key to preventing dependency and ensuring they remain beneficial.

A simple rule of thumb: if it’s difficult in any way to go without a plant medicine, you are likely developing an addiction. It’s time to take a break, and reevaluate your relationship with these plants.

We emphasize this point because it’s essential to be honest with yourself and proceed with care. Integration is about creating a balanced, sustainable path forward, and that requires periods of rest and reflection. Taking breaks allows you to internalize the lessons learned during ceremonies, fostering deep personal growth and ensuring that the changes you experience are meaningful and enduring. By giving yourself this time, you create a foundation for true transformation, making future ceremonies even more impactful and enriching.
