Coming Home to Yourself: A Practical Guide to Reconnecting with Nature

Invitation

Take a moment to connect and ground to the resonant frequency that is Mother Earth. Allow yourself to be washed clean and baptized in her sacred waters. Feel the warm, healing rays of the sun on your skin. Take a deep nourishing breath, and give thanks for the gift that is this life. Know yourself as Nature, as a particle of the Divine.

Our divine essence is one with Nature. As humans, our God-given birthright is to be abundant, healthy, and thriving. We are not separate from the natural world but a vital part of the intricate weaving of all life. Consciously connecting with nature is deeply nourishing for our physical, mental, and energetic bodies—it is nectar of the sweetest scent for the our soul. To connect with nature is to come home to ourselves and our true essence as divine beings, inviting prolonged states of peace, harmony, and balance.

State of Amnesia

I grew up on the Canadian prairies, spending most of the year indoors to escape the harsh, bitter Saskatchewan winters. I found joy and pleasure in the unique winter beauty; skating on the ice rink my dad made in our backyard, snowboarding, tobogganing and other snow filled fun, but the realities of icy cold temperatures kept me mostly indoors and insulated from the natural world. Summers of my childhood were the best—we’d camp, swim, bike, and pick fresh raspberries off our homegrown bushes. We never had a garden, although many do, the grow season is short, but ideal for industrial grain agriculture. In my teens & early 20’s I experienced many seasons of depression. Although I was incredibly blessed with an abundance of love & family surrounding me, I felt empty and dissatisfied with life.

Many of us have lost our connection to nature. We now live in environments where man-made barriers exist between us and the natural world. We cut and suffocate life-giving forests for consumerism, industry, and mass production. We insulate and isolate ourselves from the circadian and seasonal rhythms with modern homes, artificial lighting, and climate control. We poison our drinking waters with chemicals and pollutants. We ‘connect’ with one another through technology, starving ourselves of real-life social interaction. We prioritize convenience and comfort over sustainability and genuine human connection. We drown out the healing frequencies and sounds of nature with the constant buzz of urban life. Our lives are filled with concrete, plastic, and screens. We feel empty and disconnected. In our pursuit of progress, we’ve distanced ourselves from the very source that feeds our souls and keeps our physical bodies alive—nature itself.

Humanity is suffering greatly from this collective forgetting. We override and ignore our intuitive knowings and consistently outsource our power. We have become completely dependent upon broken systems. We are trapped in varied states of fear and dis-ease. We lack purpose and seek comfort in addiction. Many of us are lost.

Time of Remembering

Our thriving human existence is not only intrinsically connected to, but completely dependent upon nature. Each element of nature is an essential part of life on Earth.

When I first came to Costa Rica 12 years ago, I experienced a profound shift and healing as I reconnected with the natural world. Living in a simple open-air cabin in the lush Costa Rican jungle, I found myself deeply transformed. This reconciliation with nature was a coming home to myself and my true essence. It dramatically shifted how I perceive myself, life and forever changed how I interact with the world.

A Journey Through the Elements of Nature

Nature is within and all around us. Even if you live sky-high in a concrete jungle, you can reconcile your connection with nature; it might just require more creativity and effort. I invite you to take yourself on a healing journey through the elements of nature. In conscious, present awareness, immerse yourself in the natural world. Take time to consider the gifts each element and nature as a whole gives freely and unconditionally. As you journey through the practices connected with each element, allow yourself to deepen your understanding and reverence for all nature provides. Open yourself to experience your own connection and embodiment of nature.

The Earth

The Earth is our mother. Our human form is born of her and returns to her after our last breath. She holds humanity and all life in her hands. She is resilient and abundant. She unconditionally provides the sustenance our physical forms require.

Practice: Lay face down on the earth, feeling the connection to the ground beneath you. Allow your stomach, solar plexus, and belly button to connect with the energy of Mother Earth. Feel your heartbeat, Feel the heart beat of the earth, feel them merging as one. Alternatively, sit on the ground with your legs crossed. Feel the connection of your root chakra at the base of your spine anchored to the core, the center of the Earth. Thank you sacred Earth.

The Waters

Our first territory of existence in human from was within the sacred waters of our mothers womb. To return to the earths waters is to be reborn in remembrance of your divine innocent nature.

Practice: Soak in the earth’s waters, ideally a river, spring, lake, or ocean. If that’s not accessible, your bathtub or shower will do. As you bathe, use your awareness to connect these waters to the pristine springs flowing from the core of the Earth. Allow the water to cleanse and purify your body, mind and spirit, washing away anything that no longer serves. Thank you sacred Waters.

The Sun

A vital nutrient for all life, the sun warms our bodies and provides essential information and nutrients. It feeds all plant and animal life, and without it, no human life exists.

Practice: Stand or sit barefoot on the earth, allow yourself to simply bask in the glorious rays of the sun. Feel the warmth permeate your skin, filling every cell with healing light. Let the sun energize and uplift your body, mind and spirit. Thank you sacred Sun.

The Air

The breath of life. Our earthly journey begins the moment we take our first breath and ends with one last breath before death. Each and every breath is a gift from God, from nature, purified by the trees giving us life.

Practice: Find a strong and sturdy tree, sit with your back supported against its trunk. Close your eyes, and take some time to consciously breathe. Without changing simply allow yourself to breathe expansive breaths, feeling each sensation as the air enters, rejuvenating and exits, purifying your body and mind. Thank you sacred Air.

Welcome Home

Reconnecting with nature is a pilgrimage back to yourself. Each moment spent in conscious presence with the elements of the natural world is sparking the flame of your true essence & innate wisdom. As you deepen your relationship with nature, you begin to heal the parts of yourself that have been forgotten, finding peace, purpose, and a profound sense of belonging. Slowly you cease searching and seeking outside yourself and begin to trust your knowing. This is an invitation to remember who you really are, a divine being walking an earthly form.

God bless you on your journey home.
